Dendro won't open

Dendro won't open

Postby socalmicskills » Tue Jul 20, 2010 5:30 pm

After I got my Dendro from the LFS it was nice and open, all of the time. A couple of weeks later I installed a sump. I had a feeling it wouldn't be happy in it's old spot (med light, light flow) because the sump would create more flow there. I was right, it didnt' open again there. So I tried moving it all over the tank low to mid light and flow, still nothing. It hasn't opened in a week. It won't eat anything. It was doing so good before that, even starting to grow two more heads. Any ideas? I've tried feeding it even though it wasn't open, no luck. I've moved it completely into a shadow. Everytime I've moved it I left it for a day or so before trying again. Once in a while one or two tentacles would come out partially, but never staying out, it just stays tightened up the whole time. I've got a whisker (duncan's) coral that is doing fine and I got them both at the same time, didn't have to move the whisker though because it was on the opposite side of the increased flow.

Give it some time the shock of adding the sump couple place him into a brief dormant stage for his protection and natural way of combating natural selection in the oceans. Some corals (duncans included) can survive closed for a while until they settle in a new place, give it time and look for receding structure is what will tell the true health of your species.

Still not opening. The tentacles have loosened up a bit they are raised a tad, but not open by any means. I can't really tell if there are any signs of degeneration. I don't see the heads on it that were starting to form before it all began. It seems like it is getting a very minor amount better by the day, but still looking really bad, hasn't eaten at all

the only thing you can do is just leave it and keep your water as consistent as possible (ie salinity, dKH, temperatures)

That's exactly what I've been doing. And, guess what???? It finally ate last night. And today, the tentacles are all about 1/3 of the way out, it must be getting better. Woo Hoo, I definitely didn't want to lose this one, it's my favorite coral so far, it looked so awesome when it was all the way opened, and I dreamed of when it would grow into a large colony.

I don't know if funny is the word, but I know what you mean. It has been eating regularly now, still hasn't opened all the way yet, but the heads on the sides look like they are coming back, so that's good.

We had a sun polyp corals that did not open for months until we realized that they only come out at night and dont need lots of lighting and in the wild they grow in turbulent darker areas of the reef. We started dropping in frozen Cycloppeze every other day and it started to come out with its tenticals.

Coral Beauty nipping xenia

Here's the one that I watched, though there are others out there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gKizvpGKPk My royal gramma and clownfish never went near it, but my yellowtail blue damsel had a blast playing inside it, so if you need to get a damsel out of your tank, this trick will probably work. I also caught every hermit crab in my tank and one snail. Note: If you make the hole too big like I did, and the fish keeps escaping, use a net to cover the hole before you grab for it. Nets travel through water much faster than hands.

Zoanthids growth?
by: Tommygun

People talk of zoanthids not growing down on surfaces just up and I am here the say from personal experience that zoanthids grown up, down, around, over and everywhere they can and will if conditions are right. From what I have seen my 2" frag went to about 6" in about 8 months. Good light exposure, high nutrients, and placing my zoanthids just under where my tangs attack their food really helps feed them at the same time.

Torch, Hammer, Branching Hammer, Anchor, Frogspawn, and Grap
by: Tommygun

I seem to have a really hard time keeping any of the wall hammers that I have bought and like other reefers have started to realize that if a wall hammer shows any receding of tissue at the time of sale it is not a smart investment to make. Then again it seems like most corals are not the best investments, then again the best things in life are not investment. I saw some guy online who had a tank full of just frogspawns and hammers and it was amazing.

Loose seaweed and algae

any type of organic material when decomposing will create NH3 . NH3 is then reduced to nitrite .... then to nitrate . keep your clean up crew stocked and you shouldnt have problems . hermit crabs will take care of business .
